The game is easy to learn but hard to master, and its egalitarian spirit blurs the lines between amateur and pro, celebrity and mortal. Its exploding popularity during the pandemic has helped to draw in a new crop of players, from professional athletes to suburban moms and kids. But it’s the grassroots—local pickleball clubs, local park open plays, and tournaments like this one in Boca Raton—that keep the sport’s culture alive.

The tournament was not on any PPA or APP tour, but the venue and the crowd were impressive. The organizer, Carl Foster, is a trailblazer in pickingleball marketing; his television shows and corporate and nonprofit branding events have put him at the forefront of the sport’s management and promotion.

Guests at the event included many of the game’s biggest stars, from Leigh and Anna Waters, a mother-daughter doubles juggernaut, to Tyson McGuffin, a tattooed Idaho father of three, to the Johns brothers, who play professionally. At the tournament, they played alongside each other and with less-skilled players, as is custom in pickleball. In between matches, they chatted with fans and posed for photos; a m.c. drew cheers when he announced that two pros had signed hats for fans. (The pros also donated a small prize to the winners.) It was the kind of buzz that could only be generated by a growing community with a unique passion.

Mixers

In addition to its world-class golf and tennis facilities, Boca West Country Club is home to four pickleball courts. This popular new sport is a fun and social alternative to tennis and has grown in popularity among Members of all ages and skill levels. The club holds POP (pickleball organized play) two times a week, daily open play, and group matches and offers clinics for beginners and intermediate players.

Using solid paddles and polymer wiffle balls, the game combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis and is played on a court that has the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court and is striped like a tennis net but two inches lower. The fast-paced sport is a good workout and provides an opportunity to improve balance, agility, reflexes, and hand-eye coordination without excessive strain on the body.

Weekly mixers provide the perfect opportunity to enhance your pickleball skills and meet other pickleball players. During these events, you’ll be matched with similar-skilled opponents and play will be facilitated by a professional pickleball coach. If you enjoy the mixers and are interested in competing at a higher level, the club also offers weekly clinics led by IPTPA pros. During the inaugural Pickle for Pink Pro-Am Charity Tournament, hosted by Nikki and Michael Simkins, the club raised over $60,000 for Florida Breast Cancer Foundation through tournament proceeds, donations, and 11% of sales from E11EVEN Vodka’s special edition pink bottle throughout October.
